Appearance; Riku is a tall young man of average build, probably about five foot six. He has long silver hair (that needs to be cut), long bangs, and sea-green eyes. He has slightly tanned skin, muscular arms, and a thin body. After the events of Kingdom Hearts II, he now has a burn scar on his left leg. He usually (now, anyway) wears a black shirt with a zipper up the middle, a white and yellow vest over that, and baggy jeans and sneakers. Before, he had been wearing the standard Organization coat, black boots, and matching blindfold for good measure.
Personality; Riku is a strong, determined boy with a good head on his shoulders. His heart is strong, and he cares a lot for his best friends Sora and Kairi. He is very competitive (at least with Sora), always striving to do his best. He is protective of his friends, and often critical of himself, especially since he has done so many bad things to the worlds. He has a good sense of justice, and never does things purely out of revenge.
Riku's loyalties hold fast with his friends, Sora and Kairi. Throughout his time travelling worlds and going between the dark and light, Riku has found that despite everything, his emotions for his friends have remained true. Sora seems to be the person closest to Riku, and he has done a great many things for Sora, despite the fact that not many know. Kairi also has a special place in his heart since he looked after her heartless body, and eventually came to try and keep her from being taken by Axel, then Saix. They are the only two who have ever captured his heart to the point that he would never let them go for anything in the world.
During his travels, Riku's encounters with King Mickey and Ansem the Wise have proved the trio to be a very strong and intellectual group. Riku respects the King, but Ansem is another story. He feels close to Mickey because the king saved him at Castle Oblivion and even assured him that he could live as both dark and light, despite the pain it brought him. Ansem, on the other hand, allowed Riku access to Sora as he waited for his awakening. Ansem also provided Riku with a place to stay while the King was searching the worlds, allowed him a place to recover from his fight with Roxas, and even a sort of sanctuary from his shame at taking the form of Xehanort's Heartless. Despite that, as DiZ, he used and manipulated Riku to do what he wanted, and that's not something he can forget any time soon.
He may have been DiZ's confidante, but he would never stoop to the levels the older man did. He didn't hate that much.
Riku has a dark side as well. He has given into the darkness twice, the second time for friends. Provoking him has caused many troubles for others, and he will not hesitate to fight for his friends and for his own protection.
Abilities/Strengths; Having grown up with plenty of free time, Riku has spent a good deal of his childhood being Sora's rival. In doing so, they both began to learn how to fight each other with wooden swords. Riku, at the beginning of Kingdom Hearts, was by far the stronger and faster of the two. However, as he slowly sank further into the darkness, he began to lose his initial bright determination and strength against his friend.
When he was possessed, he could control the darkness to an extent that only Xehanort's Heartless could and once he was freed from that imprisonment, he was able to control a little bit of that. Accepting himself, or learning to, Riku has the potential to master both light and dark and become the most powerful keybearer out there. Sadly, this is not the case now, and might not be for a long time.
Riku is fast in battle with several short-burst aerial attacks. He also knows Cure.
Weaknesses; With every good thing comes a price. Losing himself to the dark, Riku began to be weak against both the light and the dark, and unable to use both very well. Xehanort's darkness burned and used him, but Sora's light was too bright for him. In the end, he had to settle on a new road and attempt to control his power and accept himself. Because he has not done this yet, he still has the potential to be both strong and weak with both of these elements if he is hit with a large amount.
Riku's greatest fear is losing himself to Xehanort again and destroying what he loves most in this world. He would never be able to live with himself if he lost Kairi and Sora again, and that was why he struggled so hard to control his powers. He does not appear to be afraid of anyone in the Organization but he has a grudge against Saix and a tentative friendship with Axel (when the red head isn't attempting to kill Sora to get Roxas back), but it can probably be assumed that his anger and hate comes out most with Xemnas. However, scenes between Riku and Xemnas are lacking, so this is just a presumption.
He did not seem afraid of Xemnas, but he was readily eager to fight him to get Sora back, and took a blow to his leg to keep his friend safe.
Notable Possessions; The clothes on his back, his blindfold (in his pocket), and his keyblade.
History; Riku grew up on Destiny Islands with his best friend Sora, until along came Kairi. She started a fierce, but playful, rivalry between the two boys, who only wanted to win her affections. Once Riku became 15, he was the strongest of all of the Island kids and took on the role of unnamed leader. He came up with the idea to build a raft to look for other worlds. The night before they left, however, is what changed everything. Believing that Kairi and Sora wanted to leave without him, he stalked off and opened the door into the heart of the world, causing Kairi to lose her heart. He disappeared and landed in Hollow Bastion, where Maleficent took him in.
She manipulated him and told him how Sora had abandoned him in exchange for the Keyblade. Riku believed her and tried to find Kairi's heart on his own, slowly falling further into the darkness. He challenged Sora for the Keyblade at long last, but lost because Sora had found strength in friends and not in the darkness. Running, he was met with Xehanort's Heartless, "Ansem", who convinced him to open his heart. He was possessed and used, nearly killing Sora and losing Kairi forever.
Xehanort's Heartless took him away, but Sora found a way to separate the two once they arrived before the door to Kingdom Hearts. With the Heartless defeated, Riku closed the door in on him and King Mickey, and let Sora go.
He was brought to Castle Oblivion by unknown means, but his journey through it was a test of his skills and strength. Riku had to combat his own darkness, as well as a replica of himself, Lexaeus, and Zexion. In the end, he fought back the dark and chose a new path for himself, leaving the Castle a new person. But soon the dark became too overwhelming, and so he left to fix it. DiZ took him under his wing and ordered the capture of Roxas, which Riku did only to get Sora to wake up. In the end, he had to give up his normal form just so he could defeat him, and took on the form of "Ansem" again.
The rest of his time during the second game is told through bits and pieces of the novels: how he fought Xemnas to let Namine run away, how he met Axel again several times and discovered what he was doing, and his encounter with Saix. Riku left clues along the way to try and tell Sora that he was alive and safe and to keep going, but Sora didn't really care to take notice of them too much. He made his way to The World That Never Was to save Kairi and Namine from Saix, revealing his identity to her. She showed Sora that it was Riku in the guise of "Ansem", and the three reunited with the King and his friends. He regained his regular body when the real Ansem's machine was destroyed, and he accompanied Sora to the final battle with Xemnas. Injured, he let Sora help him to the Dark Beach, and then the two went home to Destiny Islands.
